HEARTSAVER BLOODBORNE PATHOGENS

The Heartsaver Bloodborne Pathogens course teaches students how to protect themselves and others from being exposed to blood or blood-containing materials. This course is designed to meet Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) requirements for bloodborne pathogens training when paired with site-specific instruction. Reflects science and education from the American Heart Association Guidelines Update for CPR and Emergency Cardiovascular Care (ECC).

WHO SHOULD TAKE THIS COURSE?

The AHA Heartsaver Bloodborne Pathogens Course is designed for anyone with a reasonable chance of coming into contact with bloodborne pathogens such as: 

  • Correctional Officers 
  • Childcare workers
  • Security guards
  • Maintenance workers
  • School personnel
  • Hotel housekeepers
  • Health and fitness club staff
  • Tattoo artists.

WHAT DOES THIS COURSE TEACH?

This course uses the PACT acronym (Protect, Act, Clean, Tell) and tagline, “Make a PACT, Know How to Act™,” to help students learn and easily recall bloodborne pathogens training.

Students learn how to:

  • Protect themselves from blood or blood-containing materials.
  • Act quickly and safely.
  • Clean the area that has blood or blood-containing materials.
  • Tell their supervisor about the incident.

WHAT FORMAT IS THIS COURSE TAUGHT IN?

This course can be taken in either an online, or traditional classroom format.

Heartsaver Bloodborne Pathogens Online is a 100% online course. Students complete the online training at their own pace and receive an online, printable certificate of completion. No in-person or classroom course is required.*

Instructor-Led Training (ILT) is an entirely in-person course whereby a student attends and receives their training in a traditional classroom setting. This course is conducted entirely in-person by an American Heart Association BLS or Heartsaver Instructor utilizing videos, skills demonstrations, lecture, and discussion. Students must successfully complete all course requirements, including the written exam (if required by employer or regulatory agency)* and skills performance to receive their course completion eCard.

* The Heartsaver Bloodborne Pathogens Online course, by itself, does not meet OSHA's requirement for bloodborne pathogens training, as it does not contain site-specific instruction. In order to comply and meet with OSHA's requirements, we suggest hosting an Instructor-Led Training for Bloodborne Pathogens at your location.

Heartsaver Bloodborne Pathogens Online: 1h*

Instructor-Led Training: 1h + (Additional time for site-specific training; will vary by location)

* Course completion times may, and often do vary based on many factors such as course format, number of students, student:manikin ratio, individual learner abilities, remediation, and other parameters. Listed course lengths are approximations only.

WHAT ARE THE PREREQUISITES FOR TAKING THIS COURSE?

Heartsaver Bloodborne Pathogens Online: There are no prerequisites prior to taking the Heartsaver Bloodborne Pathogens Online course.

Instructor-Led Training: There are no prerequisites or online course work required prior to attending the Heartsaver Bloodborne Pathogens course.

WHAT ARE THE COURSE COMPLETION REQUIREMENTS?

Heartsaver Bloodborne Pathogens Online: Successful completion of the Heartsaver Bloodborne Pathogens Online course.

Instructor-Led Training: Students must actively attend the classroom session in its entirety, including site-specific instruction. Students must also complete a written examination* and achieve a passing score of 84% or above.

* The written examination is optional and will only be administered if required by a student’s employer or regulatory agency. Students are solely responsible for determining if the written exam is an employer or regulatory agency requirement.

WHAT TYPE OF CERTIFICATE OR CARD WILL I RECEIVE?

Heartsaver Bloodborne Pathogens Online students can access and print a participation certificate upon completing the online course.

Students attending and completing the Instructor-Led Training for Bloodborne Pathogens will receive a tear out course participation card which is included on the back cover of their Heartsaver Bloodborne Pathogens Student Workbook. For classes with site-specific training, Emergency Care Professionals can provide a formal completion certificate.
